Mac OS 10.10 ‘Yosemite’ brings desktops and smartphones closer

Apple WDCC News: Latest desktop software features 'Continuity'.

By Ben Sullivan

Apple’s newest version of its Max OS X operating system, 10.10, dubbed Yosemite, has been redesigned to bring desktop and mobile software closer together,

Using a feature called ‘Continuity’ it allows users switch between the two. The feature lets users send work between iPhones and desktops with one click, as well as automatically tethering iPhones to Macs for mobile internet.

Mac users will also now be able to send and receive text messages and phone calls.

This feature was showcased on stage by Apple software boss Craig Federighi, who made a live call to Dr Dre, the newest ‘Apple employee’ after its Beats $3bn acquisition.

"Yosemite is the future of OS X with its incredible new design and amazing new apps, all engineered to work beautifully with iOS," said Federighi.

"We engineer our platforms, services and devices together, so we are able to create a seamless experience for our users across all our products that is unparalleled in the industry. It’s something only Apple can deliver."

Updates to Spotlight, Mac’s search feature, means that users can now search in the App Store, Wikipedia, Maps, Bing, iTunes and iBooks rather than just their files and calendar.

The company also claimed to have made improvements to the speed of Safari, Mac’s native web browser. Apple said Safari can now load JavaScript more than 6x faster then Firefox and Chrome, and its multi-tab functionality is also more efficient than competitors.

Apple Mail as received a new feature called Mail Drop that allows for the sending of large attachments by creating a secure link for the recipient to download the attachment from.
