The City of London Police has started targeting websites that it considers violate copyright laws for profit.
As part of the move, the police have collaborated with the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau, and have written to two sites alleged of sharing links to pirated copies of music, movies and games.
The letters cautioned operators of the sites they are violating UK laws that may lead to heavy jail sentence of 10 years and urged site owners to consult with the police to avoid offences being committed by June 14, while those ignored would face further action.
The City of London Police was cited by the BBC as saying that the alleged websites are able to operate and profit from advertising on their sites without having licenses or paying the creators and owners of the films, TV programmes, music and publications.
"Intellectual property crime is a serious offence that is costing the UK economy hundreds of millions of pounds each year," the police said.
In addition, the move would assist in protecting UK citizens from the harmful software and other malicious programmes that could be found on alleged sites.
