London Fire Brigade gets Uberised

News: Uber-like technology utilises GPS tracking with real-time status information.

By James Nunns

The London Fire Brigade is utilising Uber-like technology to deal with emergency fire calls.

Supplied by Capita Communication and Control Solutions, the mobilising system for handling 999 calls in London, will help control officers deal with the 170,000 plus emergency calls it receives each year.

Using GPS tracking technology combined with real-time status information, similar to the Uber app, it will allow the Fire Brigade’s control officers to track London’s 155 fire engines.

Officers will be able watch the fire engine’s journey on-screen and feed-back estimated time of arrival to callers.

On average London fire fighters attended 263 incidents per day last year, meaning that organising the locations of the fire engines is extremely important.

The technology means that fire engines will be mobilised to emergencies according to their proximity to incidents. The old system relied upon engines being mobilised from the closest fire station.

Much more specific addresses for incidents are another improvement; the previous system allowed the Brigade to search for over 80,000 street records, the new system has 7.5 million addresses.
