LastPass has launched free password syncing across multiple devices to enable greater mobility.
The service will sync passwords across all devices automatically, meaning that when a password is changed for an account on one device it is instantly available on any other device.
Current users of the free service will receive the upgraded service automatically.
LastPass securely remembers users’ passwords, helping with the problem of having to regularly generate new and complex passwords to sign up to services online.
It is installed as an add-on to the user’s browser, meaning that rather than logging into individual websites, they can log in to every service through LastPass.
Recent revealed breaches such as the hacks of Yahoo and LinkedIn show the danger of reusing passwords. While some services may be highly secure, all it takes is for one service to be compromised and an attacker might have access to all accounts using the same password.
According to LastPass, more than 1 billion passwords have been publicly leaked in 2016 alone.
“We’re still on a mission to be the last password you need to know, and in the future, maybe even eliminate our own master password, so there’s no password to remember at all. When that leap comes, we’ll be there to help tackle the next generation of security challenges,” wrote Joe Siegrist, Founder, VP & GM of LastPass, in a blog post.
“We want to empower our users to take back control of their online security, and no longer feel powerless against the next wave of breaches. The more convenient we make password management the better we will be able to solve this problem.
“We want our users to bring LastPass with them everywhere – including the workplace because accessing the sites, apps, and services you use every day doesn’t end because you checked in at the office.”
