Kim Dotcom’s Mega to accept Bitcoin virtual currency

Users interested in paying with the internet currency will have to access BitVoucher, the website of Mega's new reseller.

Web storage service Mega, the sequel of Kim Dotcom’s Megaupload, has announced they will be accepting virtual currency. The Bitcoin curerncy will allow users to subscribe for more storage space on the file-sharing web service.

Mega follows social news website Reddit and blogging platform WordPress to accept bitcoin payments, which is becoming popular among online merchants.

Kim Dotcom announced through a twitter post that: "Mega now accepts BITCOIN via our newest reseller Bitvoucher."

After payment, users will then be provided with extra storage ranging from 500GB to 4TB in addition to the 50GB of free cloud storage.

Users interested in paying by using the internet currency have to access BitVoucher, the website of Mega’s new reseller.

The new site offers secure email, chat, voice, video and mobile services which claims to position Mega as a monopoly for internet privacy and freedom.

Mega was launched in January 2013, a year after Dotcom was arrested in January 2012 after authorities US authorities shutdown Megaupload following allegations of piracy.

US prosecutors had accused the website of inflicting copyright possessors with losses of about $500m, while the firm generated $175m in overall revenues.

The file hosting service had sought for the US criminal charges against the company to be discharged , arguing that the US had no authority over the service since it is based in Hong Kong.
