The integration of kill switches in smartphones halved the number of thefts of smartphones in London in 2014.

Major smartphone makers such as Apple, Samsung and Google have integrated kill switch in smartphones which allows the users to deactivate or make it useless if it is stolen.

London Mayor Boris Johnson said: "We have made real progress in tackling the smartphone theft epidemic that was affecting many major cities just two years ago."

Apple added the kill switch call Activation Lock in September 2013 while Samsung added a kill switch in its devices in April.

Google also followed suit and added the feature in its Android Lollipop.

San Francisco District attorney George Gascon said, "The wireless industry continues to roll out sophisticated new features, but preventing their own customers from being the target of a violent crime is the coolest technology they can bring to market."

According to reports, smartphone theft in San Francisco and New York dropped 40% and 25% respectively last year.
