Italy penalises Apple for misleading consumers

Apple fined €900,000 for not providing adequate information about consumers’ guarantees

By CBR Staff Writer

Italy’s antitrust authority has fined Apple €900,000 (US$1.2 million) for not providing adequate information about consumers’ guarantees.

The Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato proceeded to initiate an enquiry after receiving complaints from consumers groups about "unfair commercial practices."

It said Apple had not informed shoppers of their legal right to two years’ technical support, but only recognising a one-year standard warranty instead.

Apple’s three entities, Apple Sales International, Apple Italia Srl and Apple Retail Italia, will have to share the fine.

While Apple Sales International will have to shell out €540,000, Apple Italia Srl and Apple Retail Italia need to pay €180,000 each.

According to the antitrust agency, Apple has been given 90 days time to update its Italian website to reflect that it now offers a free-of-charge two-year warranty.
