Global shipments of Apple’s iPhone 5 smartphone have reached 27.4 million units during the fourth quarter of 2012 compared to 15.4 million shipments of Samsung’s Galaxy S3 smartphone, according to a new report.
According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, the iPhone 5’s touchscreen, extensive distribution and liberal operator subsidies have helped the device reach the top position.
Apple’s iPhone 4S shipments reached 17.4 million units and captured 8% og the global smartphone share during the quarter.
The report also revealed that Apple’s iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S collectively accounted for 1 in 5 of all smartphones shipped globally in Q4 2012.
Samsung’s Galaxy S3 was mostly used by consumers and operators across North America, Europe and Asia.
The research firm anticipates that Samsung will release its Galaxy S4 upgrade to compete against Apple’s iPhone range of smartphones.
