Intel has launched a family of hardware and software called ‘In-Vehicle Solutions’, which will provide computing power to next generation cars.
The offerings will power the in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems of the cars, providing advanced driver assistance to boost driving experience such as autonomous or self-driving cars.
Intel offerings include a range of compute modules, an integrated software stack of operating system, middleware, and development kits.
Intel’s In-Vehicle Solutions will feature Linux based hardware platform, its Atom processor E3000 series, pre-integrated automotive middleware which claimed to help in fast booting.
The company says the solution will cut down the time taken for infotainment component development by automakers by more than 12 months and reduce costs up to 50%.
Intel Internet of Things Group corporate vice president Doug Davis said, "Our goal is to fuel the evolution from convenience features available in the car today to enhanced safety features of tomorrow and eventually self-driving capabilities."
"To further strengthen Intel’s technology partnership with the automotive industry and prepare for the future, we are combining our breadth of experience in consumer electronics and enterprise IT with a holistic automotive investment across product development, industry partnerships and groundbreaking research efforts," Davis added.

The company said that it will work with its subsidiary Wind River, as well as with Green Hills Software, Mobica, Symphony Teleca, QNX, and XSe, to provide solutions and services to automakers adopting Intel In-Vehicle Solutions.
Intel is already supplying technology to automakers and its technology is being used by BMW’s Navigation System Professional in all its vehicle models, the Infiniti InTouch infotainment system in the Infiniti Q50 and the Driver Information System in the all-new 2015 Hyundai Genesis.
Once dominant player in personal computer chips, the company is exploring for new engines of growth off late, after facing slowdown in its traditional market.
The company has been also pushing expansion in wearable computing market and trying to ship more number of chips for smartphones and tablets.
As part of its effort, earlier this week the company partnered with Chinese chip manufacturer Fuzhou Rockchip Electronics, known as Rockchip, to manufacture chips for entry level Adroid tablets.
Both the companies plan to sell Intel branded chips which will be targeting low end tablets.
