The photo sharing app that boasts nearly 50 million users and was recently acquired by Facebook is going strong in user downloads.
The popular application reached 10 million downloads this week on Android after only being released three weeks ago; its founders think it has the potential to hit 100 million downloads.
Instagram, which was founded in 2010, was acquired by Facebook earlier this month for $1bn in cash and stocks.
In a post on his profile page Zuckerberg said the large user base of Instagram was a significant factor for its acquisition.
"This is an important milestone for Facebook because it’s the first time we’ve ever acquired a product and company with so many users. We don’t plan on doing many more of these, if any at all. But providing the best photo sharing experience is one reason why so many people love Facebook and we knew it would be worth bringing these two companies together."
The Facebook founder said that visual is an important interest area for the social networking site with a valuation at $100bn.
"For years, we’ve focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family," Zuckerberg said.
"Now, we’ll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests."
