Earlier this year IBM introduced its Mobile Workload Pricing (MWP) for z/OS which can reduce the cost of growth for mobile transactions processed by programs such as CICS, IMS, and DB2 for z/OS.
MWP provides a way of reporting z/OS system utilization, which can improve price/performance for sub-capacity eligible programs processed by select Mobile Workload Pricing Defining Programs.
Analyst Gartner issued a report on the topic. It said: "Predictability has long been the mantra of mainframe capacity planners and those responsible for the mainframe budget for years, going back to when each MIPS costs hundreds of thousands of dollars and memory was measured in tens of thousands of dollars per MB. Anecdotal discussions with mainframe customers over the years revealed great pride in the precision of forecasting future capacity requirements and having the budget in place to support that growth at the right time."
"However, for those customers who are seeing mainframe demand impacted by mobile workloads, they should investigate the recent introduction by IBM of mobile workload pricing for the mainframe. These new pricing constructs can potentially reduce the cost of incremental hardware, software and maintenance to support new workloads."
IBM’s new pricing will provide savings when mobile workloads contribute to the monthly peak usage.
IBM is making a new Windows-based tool available that will make adjustments to the millions of service units (MSU) values reported for mobile transaction data. Developing familiarity with this new process will be important as IBM has indicated that the tool will effectively subtract up 60% of the measured usage as reported for mobile workloads in a given hour for a given logical partition (LPAR).
