Huawei has announced that it will be working with the Open Network Operating System and Open Networking foundation in order to build an open SDN industry ecosystem.

The purpose of the software-defined networking ecosystem is to meet the operator requirements for ultra-fast connections at lower costs. With this in mind, the partnership is hoping to accelerate the commercialisation of the SDN ecosystem.

ONOS is the first open source SDN control platform which focuses on operators’ networks and service requirements, such as reliability, security, and scalability.

The Huawei SDN solution will fully support the ONOS platform, with the company focusing on creating an open and programmable SDN network architecture.

Zha Jun, President, Fixed Network Product Line, Huawei and ONOS Board Member, said: "SDN openness and innovation will be a huge motivator behind industry development, requiring the joint efforts of numerous stakeholders."

"Huawei will contribute with operator requirements to the ONOS core architecture. We will enrich southbound and northbound interfaces, and actively provide open source code to support ONOS with adapting to various SDN scenarios and build an open and healthy industry ecosystem."

This agreement comes as part of Huawei’s commitment to developing SDN architectures that will help operators to improve operational efficiency, achieve flexible service deployment and open network capabilities.
