Chinese smartphone makers attempts to trademark “groufie”

Hauwei's Ascend P7 phone features panoramic camera for group selfies.

By CBR Staff Writer

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei has filed an application to register "groufie", a portmanteau of group and selfie, as a trademark.

Huawei filed a trademark application before United States Patent and Trademark Office last month, and has also filed in France, Germany, China and Russia.

The company’s latest smartphone, Ascend P7 incorporates a "groufie" feature, sporting a lens for panoramic selfie shooting, as well as being equipped to cope with low lighting.

Huawei consumer business group chief executive Richard Yu said the company’s commitment to developing premium quality smartphones over the past three years has paid off.

"We are now ranked number three globally in terms of smartphone shipments, and our brand recognition is growing steadily in key regions such as China and Western Europe," Yu added.

Built on the success of its previous smartphone, Ascend P7 features a five inch high definition display, as well as 8MP front-facing and 13MP rear-facing cameras.
