How one visual effects company saves thousands with FileMaker’s database

Framestore speeds up film-making using FileMaker,

By Amy-Jo Crowley

The visual effects company behind Skyfall, The Dark Knight and Gravity has saved tens of thousands of pounds after looking to database management provider FileMaker to handle its production information.

London-based Framestore, which employs over 600 artists, computer scientists and developers, required a system to protect its volume of data produced including camera shots, lens height and colour space from film projects, which employees could avail of when needed.

Alex Jackson, software developer at Framestore, selected FileMaker’s rapid development platform as it allowed staff to initiate and make changes to film projects quicker.

"The fact that many film and TV production companies use FileMaker means data shared with and from clients is often in this format, making projects seamless," he explained.

"The flexibility provided by FileMaker is also vital for us to effectively manage constantly evolving projects and allows hundreds of people from inside and outside our business access to the data."

In particular, Filemaker, which can be accessed on mobile devices, iPads and desktops, allows teams to view sequences on the go and maker necessary changes on the go.

"For example, a dragon’s foot may be too wide once the actor’s sequence is shot – this information can be fed back to the artist, who can adapt the effect, allowing for any re-shoots to be done almost immediately," said Jackson.
