The launch of the first tablet aimed specifically at younger children will help stimulate skills development, say the device’s developers.

Digital specialist Reply has worked with baby care brand Chicco to develop Happy Tab, a device for children between the ages of 18 months and six years.

Based on the Android operating system, Happy Tab provides children with interactive content and 26 pre-installed applications to stimulate their abilities at different stages of growth.

Reply designed the user experience, as well as most of the games supplied with the device, to stimulate the child’s skills in four main areas: language, hand coordination, logic and creativity.

The development of the tablet involved tailoring the user experience for the needs of small children. The in-built MP3 Player, for example, allows children to listen to the same song in two different languages.

The device includes password-protected parental controls and only adults can access the internet via the tablet.

The parental interface allows limits to be set for the amount of time that each child can use the device.

Parents can use a wireless connection to download apps and can then make the software available to children.

Happy Tab also includes a system for updates to pre-installed apps and for offers relating to new software.
