The hacker group Anonymous has posted the personal details of thousands of US bank executives including phone numbers and computer login details on a government website.
The attack is claimed to be carried out as part of the hackers’ new ‘Operation Last Resort’ campaign to protest against the prosecution of hacktivist Aaron Swartz in January 2012.
Aaron Swartz was a researcher at Harvard University and known for his contribution to the development of RSS and the popular website Reddit. He committed suicide after he was charged with allegedly hacking into the Massachusetts Institute of Technology website and downloading documents from a paid journal service called JSTOR.
Hackers posted a spreadsheet titled ‘oops we did it again’ on Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center website that contained contact information, email addresses and encrypted passwords of about 4,000 executives from local and community banks all through the US.
Anonymous said in a statement: "We note that the Federal Reserve minidrop earlier was just a counter-distraction?.?.?.?We await the DOJ’s statement."
In January, hackers attacked the website of the United States Sentencing Service and published a notice, demanding modifications to existing internet crime legislation.
The hacker group claimed responsibility for the latest postings and recommended that the data was taken from the earlier attack on the Federal Reserve.
Recently, hackers have also obtained background control of several ‘.gov ‘sites as they converted the websites of US Sentencing Commission and the US Probation Office for the state of Michigan into games of asteroids.
In 2012, the group claimed it attacked and forced multiple UK government websites offline in reply to the country’s action towards Julian Assange.
