A leading Czech anti-virus firm Avast has said hackers are increasingly targeting gaming websites largely meant for children.
The security firm says it identified more than 60 sites that contained the term ‘game’ or ‘arcade’ in their title and that their pages redirected them to infections and unwanted software.
It said the most notable was cutearcade.com which generated more than 12,600 infection reports when it ran a scan.
Avast CTO Ondrej Vlcek was quoted by the BBC as saying the sites with mini-games and flash apps meant for children did most of the damage.
Cutearcade redirected users to linuxstabs.com, a malware distribution point, and its owner Two Point Oh did not respond to requests for comment.
Avast said the problem has become much prevalant than October last year, when it was reported children’s games were affected through a few Chinese websites.
Experts said parents should discuss the security threat with their chidren as they are not aware of such threats, and must regularly update security software on their children’s computers.
