Starting 22 November, Google will stop offering Gmail application for BlackBerry smartphones made by the Canadian company Research in Motion (RIM).
This was made public in a blog posting of the Mountain View, California-based search engine company. Google added that users may continue to use the app if it has already been downloaded.
RIM is fighting against odds to revive its smartphone market share as customers are increasingly opting for Android devices or Apple Inc’s iPhone.
Google said in a statement on its website on Tuesday that it will instead focus on "building a great Gmail experience in the mobile browser."
In an emailed statement RIM said that the BlackBerry operating system supports "native" Gmail so a dedicated app is not needed to access its messages. It means the ability to synchronise e-mail to your BlackBerry.
The company added that the large majority of BlackBerry Gmail users already rely on native support.
This move follows the removal of the Gmail app for iOS within a day of its release, after discovering a few bugs.
