Following Skype’s introduction of real-time language translation for its users, Google has announced its intention to update its translation app for phones with speech recognition capabilities in a wide range of languages.
The update is expected to include the ability to translate a popular spoken language into written text, with the ultimate aim of the update to improve the app for language learners and travellers, reported the New York Times.
Presently, the app can translate 90 languages allows users to translate offline without the need of theinternet, a feature especially useful for traveling.
It also allows users to save translations and access them from a different device.
According to the publication, the search giant is also expected to announce a new service which will allow users to hold their phones up to a foreign street sign and get an automatic translation on their screens.
According to Google, its translation app has been installed more than 100 million times on Android phones, whereas Skype’s translation service is only being used by few thousand people.
