Google has teamed up with Oxford University’s computer science and engineering departments to bolster its artificial intelligence (AI) efforts.
As part of the latest deal, aimed at promoting scientific research into revolutionising human-machine communications, Oxford professors, who were behind startups Dark Blue Labs and Vision Factory, will join Google’s DeepMind team.
Further, the professors will also conduct joint appointments at Oxford University, where they will also go on with part time work.
Oxford University computer science department head Professor Mike Wooldridge said: "Machine Learning is a technology whose time has come.
"We have invested heavily in this area and we are truly excited at the prospect of what we can achieve together with Google.
"We are extremely proud of Phil, Nando, Ed, and Karl, and truly grateful for their efforts in securing such a fantastic donation to the department, and for paving the way for future collaboration with one of the world’s leading computing companies."
Earlier this week, Google led the $500m funding round for the Florida-based virtual reality start up Magic Leap, which builds hardware and software to deliver augmented reality.
