Google will release the latest version of its mobile phone operating system Android by June or July.

Gadget and product review site Pocket-lint has quoted sources saying that the operating system nicknamed ‘Ice Cream’ by Google is set for a summer release with an announcement in May at the search engine company’s I/O conference in San Francisco.

Pocket-lint claimed that one of SonyEricsson’s new smartphones displayed at the Consumer Electronics Show at Las Vegas appeared to be running a new version of Android.

The timing of the new version’s release could be right as Google had been releasing its previous Android versions every three or four months right from September 2008, when it first launched its Android 1.0 version.

Interestingly, the previous versions have also been named after snacks and desserts alphabetical order – Donut (D), Eclair (E), Froyo (F), Gingerbread (G) and Honeycomb (H).
