Google ties up with car makers to bring Android to vehicles

The new Open Automotive Alliance (OAA) would work to bring the Android platform to cars from 2014.

Google has collaborated with major automakers including Audi, Hyundai and Honda, in addition to NVIDIA, to integrate its Android powered infotainment systems into their vehicle line-up.

Aimed at accelerating auto innovation by offering openness, customisation and scale, the new Open Automotive Alliance (OAA) would work to bring the Android platform to cars from 2014.

Google Android, Chrome & Apps SVP Sundar Pichai said that millions of people are already familiar with Android and use it everyday.

"The expansion of the Android platform into automotive will allow our industry partners to more easily integrate mobile technology into cars and offer drivers a familiar, seamless experience so they can focus on the road," Pichai said.

The open development model and common platform would facilitate carmakers to bring latest technology to their drivers, and allow developers to offer drivers and passengers with powerful experiences in a safe and scalable way, Google said.

Google, which is already focussing on drivers, has developed a self-drive car, as well as added a traffic layer to Google Maps in a bid to notify users regarding traffic jams and other road concerns.

NVIDIA president and chief executive officer Jen-Hsun Huang said that the car is the ultimate mobile computer.
