Google has launched its Map Maker edit tools in the UK, which allow users to edit data regarding places that appear in Google Maps.
The browser-based software enables users to add details about buildings, hiking trails, vegetation and other features to its maps of the country.
Prior to going live, users’ proposed additions and amendments for maps will be reviewed by other users and the company’s own staff.
Google also allows users to click a button to view suggested changes in their neighbourhood, and Map Maker Pulse, which is a constantly updating display of submissions made across the UK, each one displayed seconds after it is uploaded.
Map Maker users are offered an interface that allows them to add four types of content including places, roads, rivers and railways in addition to building outlines, natural features and political boundaries.
The search engine started Map Maker in 2008 with a group of less populated countries including Bermuda and Iceland.
Recently, Indian Police have launched a probe into Google’s Mapathon 2013 mapping contest, held during February-March 2013 following security concerns raised by Survey of India.
Survey of India said that the mapping activity would risk national security interests and breaches the National Map Policy.
