Google and Samsung have entered into a global patent cross-licensing pact, which is aimed at preventing ‘the potential for litigation’ while ‘focusing on innovation’.

Covering a broad range of technologies and business areas, the latest deal would apply to both existing patents and any of them to be filed in next decade.

Google deputy general counsel for patents Allen Lo said that Google has entered into a cross-license with partner Samsung.

"By working together on agreements like this, companies can reduce the potential for litigation and focus instead on innovation," Lo said.

The latest deal would also allow Samsung and Google gain access to each other’s patent portfolios, as well facilitating deeper collaboration on research and development of existing and future products and technologies.

Samsung Intellectual Property Center Head Seungho Ahn said that this agreement with Google is highly significant for the technology industry.

"Samsung and Google are showing the rest of the industry that there is more to gain from cooperating than engaging in unnecessary patent disputes."

However, Samsung is involved in several patent disputes with Apple in the US and South Korea over several patented mobile technologies.
