Google and Asus release new Nexus 7 Tablet

The new device has a seven-inch display, a 5MP rear-facing camera and a faster 1.5 Ghz processor.

Asustek Computer (Asus) and Google have launched a new media tablet set to rival Apple’s iPad mini.

The new Nexus 7, built by Asus, has a seven-inch display, a 5MP rear-facing camera and a faster 1.5 Ghz processor compared to the first-generation Nexus 7 device.

It is the first device to be shipped on Google’s updated Jelly Bean operating system, Android 4.3, which will sport new features like restricted profiles, allowing parents to limit access to adult content.

Other features include high resolution downloads, new game apps, and an improved Lithium-ion polymer battery, that has wireless charging and up to 10 hours of battery life.

It also has scratch resistant corning glass, a soft-touch exterior and a weight of about 290g.

Sundar Pichai, VP of Android, Chrome and Apps at Google, said: "It is now thinner, lighter and faster, with the world’s highest resolution screen in a 7-inch tablet. Whether you are sitting at home, in a coffee shop or at the airport, the new Nexus 7 is powerful, portable and made for what matters to you."

The device will be available over the coming weeks from retailers including Google Play, Amazon, Argos, ASDA and John Lewis with prices starting from £199.
