Global Foundries unveils 14nm-XM FinFET Technology

To provide twice the energy efficiency within half the size.

By CBR Staff Writer

Semiconductor equipment manufacturer, Global Foundries, has implemented the 14nm-XM FinFET transistors in the dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor, which claims to improve energy efficiency in mobile devices.

The manufacturer expects the processor to offer twice the energy efficiency in half the size compared to the 28nm-SLP technology based design.

Parts of the processor include the 14nm-XM process design kit (PDK), ARM Artisan standard-cell libraries and memories to release a Graphic Database System (GDS) file.

Global Foundries marketing, sales, design and quality executive vice president, Mike Noonen, said that the 14nm-XM FinFET technology is designed for mobile devices fit for ARM’s energy-efficient processor technology.

"Our mutual customers will benefit extensively from this partnership as they design a range of products for the mobile, tablet and computing applications of tomorrow," Noonen said.

The 14nm-XM FinFET technology claims to offer higher performance and energy-efficiency than ARM processors, 61% faster frequency, 62% low power consumption and twice the power efficiency than 28nm-SLP technology based implementation.
