Global converged mobile device market is projected to grow 55.4% in 2010 compared to previous year, and is 10% more than the previous projections from IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker.

According to IDC, mobile phone vendors will ship 269.6 million converged mobile devices in 2010, an increase of 55.4% compared to 173.5 million units shipped in 2009.

IDC worldwide quarterly mobile phone tracker senior research analyst Kevin Restivo said that the additional product introductions and an expected flurry of smartphone buying activity in the second half of the year would push the market well above previous expectations.

According to the report, in the first half of 2010, vendors shipped 119.4 million units, an increase of 55.5% compared to 76.8 million units shipped during the first half of 2009.

The top five converged mobile device operating system by market share is projected to be Symbian with 40.1%, BlackBerry OS with 17.9%, Android with 16.3%, and IOS and Windows Mobile representing 14.7% and 6.8% of OS market share, respectively.

However, the research firm has said that the smartphone market will increase at 24.5% in 2011, and the growth rate will decline progressively through 2014 and reach 13.6%.
