By CBR Staff Writer

Global mobile data service revenue is expected to account 40.4% of the $1trillion spent by the mobile customers on mobile phone services, according to a report by ABI Research.

The mobile data revenue made up of mobile internet and messaging revenue is expected to increase 21.4% between 2012 and 2014, the report said.

In 2016, North America is expected to experience an increase of the mobile data service revenue over the voice revenue.

ABI Research research associate, Ying Kang Tan ,said that wireless operators like AT&T and Verizon try to support voice and messaging revenue in the short to medium-term by offering unlimited voice calls and texts.

"Rich Communication Services (RCS) and voice and messaging APIs are a key part of their strategy of making carrier-based calls and messaging relevant to their customers," Ying Kang Tan said.

ABI Research core forecasting VP and practice director, Jake Saunders, said that in case of decrease in global messaging service revenue, mobile internet service revenue is driver of revenue growth.

"As smartphones have become the entertainment hub in our lives, music, video and TV streaming’s contribution of mobile internet service revenue has jumped to 26% in 2012," Saunders added.
