Foxconn Technology Group has announced plans to hire about 3,000 in a software development facility, where the hardware maker intends support Mozilla Foundation’s open source Firefox operating system platform.
The hiring plan follows it’s collaboration with Mozilla on its HTML5-based operating system (OS), known as Firefox OS, and design Firefox OS reference models covering smartphones, tablets, laptops and TVs.
The newly hired workforce will work at the company’s facility in the Kaohsiung Software Park, which was commissioned in 2011.
Initially, the new OS will power entry-level smartphones that are anticipated to be launched in emerging markets during mid-2013.
About 18 carriers and five handset makers, including Sony, Huawei Technologies and LG Electronics, have plans to launch products powered by the new OS.
Spanish firm Geeksphone had already started sales of the two Mozilla smartphones in April 2013 that are used by the developers who want to develop apps for the newly launched Firefox OS.
Earlier, Mozilla reported that the first consumer Firefox OS phones will be launched on Telefónica’s network in Brazil during 2013.
