Fixstars and Broadcast International have introduced CodecSys CE-10 series – a new encoding software which uses the Sony Playstation3 (Sony PS3) hardware platform to encode video.

Connected to a PC via a Gigabit Ethernet cable, the PS3 performs as an external encoder. All of the encoding is handled by the PS3, thus shifting the CPU-intensive processing from a personal workstation.

The companies claim that unlike hardware-based encoders the new software-based CE-10 is upgradeable and helps to reduce hardware costs by implementing software updates as opposed to replacing out-of-date hardware. It delivers improvements to enhance encoding speeds, image quality and other features.

The new encoding software comes in both personal and professional application. The personal application features H.264 software encoder with support for 1080i/p full HD, max bit rate of 15Mbps and Blu-ray standard compliant while the professional application additionally supports max bit rate of 150Mbps.

Satoshi Miki, CEO of Fixstars, said: This software-based encoding system frees the video workstation from the burden of what is otherwise an intensive process. The user may continue to edit uninterrupted, while the PS3 produces high-quality HD output in near real-time.
