A teenager from Finland has been found guilty of more than 50,000 hacks including attacks on MIT and Harvard University.
The attacks blocked web sites, hijacked emails and stole credit card details when he compromised 14,000.
The teen, Julius Kivimaki had his PC confiscated and returned £4,725 worth of property gained through his crimes.
The BBC reported Judge Wilhelm Norrmann saying that Kivimaki had only been 15 and 16 when he carried out the crimes in 2012 and 2013. "[The verdict] took into account the young age of the defendant at the time, his capacity to understand the harmfulness of the crimes, and the fact that he had been imprisoned for about a month during the pre-trial investigation," said a statement from the court.
Kivimaki exploiting vulnerabilities in a software program called ColdFusion. He installed backdoors.
Credit card details that he stole were used to make orders for champagne and shopping vouchers.
Kivimake was reported linked to notorious hacking group Lizard Squad.
