Facebook’s Paper app in trouble already

‘FiftyThree’ claims it has already branded ‘Paper by FiftyThree’

By CBR Staff Writer

‘FiftyThree’, the start-up behind the original ‘Paper’ app, has asked Facebook to modify the name of its newly launched social news app for the iOS.

Claimed to have 100 million users, and the winner of Apple’s 2012 iPad app of the year, the application allows users to sketch on their iPad, while the latest Facebook’s version is being planned to show newsfeeds in a magazine-style layout.

FiftyThree co-founder Georg Petschnigg said: "It came as a surprise when we learned on 30 January with everyone else that Facebook was announcing an app with the same name.

"We think Facebook can apply the same degree of thought they put into the app into building a brand name of their own," Petschnigg said.

"Facebook should stop using our brand name."

Offering both human and algorithm-generated articles and photos in a range of categories, Facebook’s ‘Paper’ app was well accepted after its launch on Apple’s iTunes store on 3 February 2014.

The launch of new app comes as an experiment on the heels of the social networking firm’s ongoing efforts to offer more substantive articles to its users.

The ‘Paper’ app is also designed to let users directly post stories to Facebook via a new editor same as latest web publishing tools that allow previewing posts before publishing.
