FIFA launches official app

It is expected to get 70 million downloads over coming months.

By Joe Curtis

FIFA’s official app has gone live, with 70 million downloads forecast over the next few months.

It is expected to be the most popular sports app ever, and will boast live coverage of more than 200 national leagues and competitions worldwide through its World Match Centre feature.

Its coverage of the 2014 Brazil World Cup will kick off this Friday too, when fans can follow the final draw to decide the first round groups for the competition.

The app is built on the foundations of FIFA.com, which gets seven billion page views and 150 million unique visitors during tournament months.

Matt Stone, head of digital at FIFA, said: "The introduction of the official FIFA app is a new chapter in FIFA’s 109-year history, delivering a new level of interaction and community.

"As the authoritative voice of football, the expansion of our digital content into mobile and tablet applications will provide an even greater experience to football fans across the world."

The app, available on iOS and Android, is claimed to merge with Facebook and Twitter to boost online fan communities, as well as FIFA.com’s own club fan bases, and features a news section and technology to track national team rankings.
