Business continuity management software provider Factonomy has implemented a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) from Lumison, the managed IT services provider, to host its desktop applications in a controlled environment.

The new system is expected to allow Factonomy to meet compliance requirements from customers including heavily regulated global investment banks.

The VDI will enable users to run Windows 7 and execute the company’s applications from a range of consumer devices, such as iPads.

The company expects the move would increase flexibility, negate the need for hardware standardisation, and reduce associated costs.

Employees can now concentrate on core business activities, creating estimated savings of over £90,000 per year, said the company.

The VDI is also expected to enable new employees to be added quickly for an additional user subscription. Factonomy has said that it is expanding over the next year, with new offices planned in the US and India.

Factonomy CEO Philip Rugani said security, efficiency and control are vital to ensure that the company is completely compliant with its customers’ needs.

Rugani added, "With some of the largest global banks in our portfolio, Lumison has provided us with an infrastructure that enables us to grow whilst maintaining the measured control required by our customer base."

Rugani continued, "We have many employees that carry sensitive and confidential information relating to clients across the globe. With employees using tablet devices on the move, Lumison has helped us to continue our mobile strategy with employees able to access the virtual environment anywhere in the world."

Lumison COO Dr Aydin Kurt-Elli said, "Our data centres come with the highest level of security accreditation (ISO 27001). Deployment of this secure infrastructure is helping Factonomy guarantee data security and uptime to its customers.

Kurt-Elli said Windows 7 is a huge driver of VDI technology at present, with software such as Microsoft Lync enhancing a collaborative and real-time approach to the way businesses communicate globally. "This will improve the speed, efficiency, and productivity of Factonomy with all applications combined into one interface," he said.

"This technology was previously only accessible to larger corporations, but cloud computing is helping companies like Factonomy realise the operational advantage of the latest Microsoft products without a huge upfront cost for the upgrade."
