Facebook is trialling a new mobile payment feature, which would enable its members to purchase products via mobile apps.

The new feature will use credit card data details already stored with Facebook and automatically fill the payment information when a user wants to purchase a product via the mobile shopping app.

Facebook spokeswoman Tera Randall said that the trial will be carried out among a very small group of users.

"The test is designed to make it easier and faster for people to make a purchase in a mobile app," Randall said.

According to the social networking firm, the new feature would also assist ecommerce firms in reducing the number of purchases being abandoned when a user refuses to enter a credit card number into their phone.

The move would boost Facebook’s attraction to ecommerce advertisers by demonstrating that ads on the social network will lead straight to purchases.

PayPal said in a statement that the company has a great relationship with Facebook and expects that to continue.

"Our customers love using PayPal on Facebook," the online payment service said.
