Facebook messenger hits 500 million active users

The company introduced app in 2011.

By CBR Staff Writer

The Facebook Messenger app has reached 500 million active users, more than double the number announced in April.

In a much criticised move, Facebook shifted the messaging feature from its main app to the Facebook Messenger app in July. This allowed users to chat with groups, send videos, and make free calls, in addition to connecting with non-Facebook users.

The BBC reported Peter Martinazzi, Facebook director of product management, as saying: "Messaging is an important part of how people stay connected and since Messenger launched in 2011 we’ve been passionate about giving people a faster and more expressive way to communicate."

Martinazzi added: "We’ve also continued to improve speed and reliability.

"Updates to Messenger ship every two weeks so it continues to evolve and improve, showing that Facebook plans to stick with the app despite the negative feedback."

According to reports, the messenger app is not generating any addition revenue for the company but Facebook is expected to come up with ideas to squeeze revenue using the messaging platform.
