Ericsson has unveiled a new mobile broadband module designed to bring high-speed wireless connections to consumer electronic devices such as e-book readers, GPS navigators, and other portable consumer electronics.
According to Ericsson, the new CE module C3607w gives device manufacturers a self-contained connectivity system to create intuitive consumer electronics by decoupling the processor and connectivity design. It is about a third of the size of the previous Ericsson modules and is packaged with an operator approval program and IPR protection to ease integration and shorten time to market.
Mats Norin, vice president of Ericsson Mobile Broadband Modules, said: This module opens a new realm of possibilities and innovation for the consumer electronics industry as they can now easily and cost-effectively integrate the power and speed of mobile broadband in today’s and tomorrow’s devices.
The company claims the new module to be its smallest and fastest mobile broadband module, capable of reaching uplink speeds of 5.76Mbps with up to 40% less power consumption than previous modules. Equipped with Ericsson’s wake-on-wireless feature, enabling remote wake-up commands from sleep mode, the CE module is also expected to enable a new set of applications for security and messaging.
Norin added: With our fourth new module in twelve months, Ericsson’s momentum in the consumer electronics industry is strong. What was once thought to be years away is today a reality. We look forward to seeing new and innovative devices focusing on the end-user experience by utilising the freedom of embedded mobile broadband.
Ericsson’s C3607w consumer electronics module is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2010.
