Ericsson has collaborated with Intel to provide an anti-theft service for notebook users. Ericsson said the theft-management service, which will be available in the second half of 2009, combines its notebook-optimized Mobile Broadband Modules and Intel’s Anti-Theft PC Protection technology that can lock a stolen or lost notebook.
The service uses built-in GPS technology to determine if a notebook is moved outside a pre-defined area. It then sends a message via SMS to the mobile broadband module, which transfers the message to Intel’s Anti-Theft function to lock the system. When the notebook is recovered, an unlock message makes the data accessible again.
George Thangadurai, director of Intel’s strategy and platform planning division, said: Intel’s Anti-Theft PC Protection technology takes notebook security to a new level, making notebook theft for profit an exercise in futility. By teaming with Ericsson, we are extending the benefits of Intel Anti-Theft PC Protection to those who use mobile broadband networks.
Very recently, Intel has announced that select Lenovo ThinkPad T400 notebooks will be among the first notebooks to ship with built-in Intel Anti-Theft PC Protection and Absolute Computrace technology built in.
