A new survey has revealed that 61% of energy security professionals believe their organisation could detect a critical system breach within 24 hours.
94% of executives agreed that their organisation is a target for cyber criminals, with 86% of respondents saying that they could detect a breach in less than one week.
49% of respondents believe their organisation could detect a cyberattack within 24 hours, while just 3% said it would take more than a month to identify it.
According to the survey, 83% of respondents said a cyber attack could do serious physical damage to their infrastructure.
Tripwire vice president of business and corporate development Rekha Shenoy said: "Cybersecurity in the energy industry is focused on protecting the availability and reliability of the critical infrastructure on which our nation relies.
Shenoy noted that most of the organisations are still underestimating the sophistication, persistence and evasive technology of the attacks even though they are aware of cybersecurity risks and are investing more resources into lowering the risks.
Shenoy said: "The reality is that most organisations need a continuous view of their entire attack surface in order to detect a breach quickly and respond before damage is done."
