DTG secures 4G filter testing contract

The pilot will run from 18 March for about two weeks.

By CBR Staff Writer

DTG Testing has secured a contract to test filters that will be used to secure digital terrestrial television from interference by 4G mobile broadband signals at 800 MHz, which are scheduled to launch across the UK later this year.

at800 is the brand name of Digital Mobile Spectrum (DMSL), a not-for-profit organisation, that represents mobile network operators with spectrum at 800 MHz.

DTG Testing will provide a conformance testing service for manufacturers, who would like to supply filters to the retail market.

DTG Testing said it will give rights to the filters that pass its tests to use the at800 logo.

DTG Testing associate director, Richard Carlton, said that although the introduction of 4G later this year will mean faster, more reliable mobile internet services for consumers, it could also disrupt a minority of viewers’ Freeview services.

"As the digital TV industry’s test centre we are committed to ensuring that new technologies work alongside existing digital TV services in the UK," Carlton added.

UK communications watchdog, Ofcom, estimated that TV signals in 2.3 million UK homes will be affected by interference from 4G signals.

The watchdog estimates that about 1000 UK viewers will not be able to access alternative choices and will be left with no TV service.
