There will be a debate in public about police plans to shut down web domains that are believed to be used by criminals.
In November 2010, the Serious and Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) recommended that Nominet should monitor illegal websites and be given the power to deal with them if they are violating the law.
Nominet maintains the register of .uk domain names and manages over nine million domain names. At present, Nominet does not have the responsibility to act against domains which are being used by known criminals.
Nominet is now asking people who wish to participate in the debate to register their names. The last date for registrations is 23 February and the first meeting is likely to be held in March this year. A summary of the issues involved will reach group members before the first meeting.
Nominet said the decision to form the policy discussion group was taken because the original proposal from SOCA received many responses.
SOCA said its recommendations were a result of the work it undertook during 2010 to shut down websites which were engaged in criminal activity.
Nominet added that the decision to form the discussion group was part of a broader strategy to make its oversight of .uk more consultative.
