Dell introduces Windows 7 transition services

Can this address the issues customers on Windows XP face in upgrading to Windows 7?

By CBR Staff Writer

Dell has introduced a comprehensive set of services to allow customers transition to the Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system (OS). The company is expected to provide additional ProConsult capabilities to address SQL Server environments.

Dell and Microsoft worked together throughout the development of Windows 7 and Dell services are reportedly designed to address IT pain points of the OS transitions. Dell said that it is also helping early adopters transition to beta versions of Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2.

According to Dell, the upcoming offerings that can help optimise and manage customers’ infrastructure, include: application management services to identify, test, remediate and deploy applications; image management services to provide functional images built by the company’s consultants according to the customers’ specifications that are ready for deployment of Windows 7 on Dell client systems; and migration and deployment services to support upgrading to Windows 7 and offer assessments and optimised OS deployment services.

The company said that its deployment services will help customers with the migration aspects including organisation, infrastructure, hardware, software, image and deployment.

Larry Baldachin, director of Microsoft Consulting Services, said: “Dell is already helping customers realise the benefits of upgrading to Microsoft Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Many customers fear that migrating to a new OS can be time-consuming and complicated, requiring armies of consultants.

It is our job to take as much pain out of the process as possible with a complete portfolio of fixed-scoped services. We have one of the tightest integrations with Microsoft and have spent literally thousands of engineering hours to help develop and test Windows 7 on the Dell platform.”

According to the company, mid-size and large businesses find planning a SQL Server upgrade complex and time consuming. Dell offers ProConsult services to support the transition to Microsoft SQL Server 2008, including: evaluation of existing infrastructure; design and implementation services; and migration of DTS packages from SQL Server 2000 to 2005 and 2008.
