The number of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks rose during the second quarter of 2013, the latest Akamai report on the state of the internet says.
During the quarter, Indonesia grabs top position from China by almost doubling its traffic percentage from Q1, with 38% of observed attack traffic, compared to China’s 33%.
However, the combined attack traffic of both countries still covers over half of observed attack traffic for the quarter.
China also maintained its consistent share by accounting for one third of the observed attack traffic, while US was ranked third even though its attack traffic declined from 8.3% to 6.9%.
In this report, Akamai also noted that DDoS attacks are getting harder to detect as hackers carrying out DDoS attacks have been working more to make their attacks look like legal ‘flash mobs’ as part of efforts to avoid automated protections.
In addition, the global average connection speed rose during the quarter by 5.2% to 3.3mbps, with the highest rises seen in European countries including Latvia and the UK that added more than 10%.
Android Webkit and Apple’s Mobile Safari saw cellular network traffic of about 38% and 34% respectively during the period.
