The payment system was managed by PNI Digital Media.

US drugstore chain CVS has closed down its online photo service following a cyber attack on Friday which compromised customers’ credit card information.

The company said that it is investigating the matter but it did not reveal the total number of customers affected by the incident.

CVS also said that customer registrations related to online photo processing are separate from its CVS.com, optical.cvs.com, cvs.com/MinuteClinic on line bill pay systems and were completely safe.

In order to prevent any higher level of damage to customer data, the company has shut down access to its online and related mobile photo services.

CVS Photo said: "Customers who provided credit card information for transactions on CVSPhoto.com are advised to check their credit card statements for any fraudulent or suspicious activity and to call their bank or financial institution to report anything of concern.

"Nothing is more central to us than protecting the privacy and security of our customer information, including financial information. We are working closely with the vendor and our financial partners and will share updates as we know more."

According to reports, Canadian vendor PNI Digital Media collected the payment information of the site.
