Creators of Myst seek funding for new game

The 'spiritual successor' to Myst would be released in 2015.

By Duncan Macrae

Cyan Worlds, the developer of popular adventure game Myst, has begun raising funds to produce a new game via crowdfunding site Kickstarter.

The company hopes to raise $1.1m (£679,000) to create a game called Obduction, which Cyan Worlds described as a spiritual successor to its earlier point-and-click adventure games.

Myst, released in 1993, put the player in the role of the ‘Stranger’, who uses a special book to travel to the island of Myst.

There, the player uses other special books written by an artisan and explorer named Atrus to travel to several worlds known as ‘Ages’. The game has several endings, depending on the course of action the player takes.

If the funding target for Obduction is reached, it is pencilled in for release on PC and Mac in the summer of 2015.

It is hoped that generating the cash through Kickstarter will help the games develop to connect with fans.

Although few details about the propsed game have been divulged, more than than $100,000 was pledged within a day of the venture being announced.
