Cloud-based JDA Enterprise Store Operations implemented by Shell at 2,300 global sites

Energy company takes global, standardised approach to its convenience retail and fuel management back office solution.

By Duncan Macrae

JDA Software Group, has announced that Shell, a global group of energy and petrochemical companies, has successfully implemented JDA Enterprise Store Operations (ESO) in the cloud as a key component of their site forecourt systems upgrade program at over 2,300 sites in selected markets.

The solution implementation has helped Shell address the complexity of efficiently managing global store operations across disparate locations. Since the initial go-live in Norway in 2010, Shell has rolled out the solution to approximately 2,300 sites in nine countries, including Denmark, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, South Africa, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The expansion is expected to continue with go-lives planned at locations in Austria this month.

Shell was challenged by compliance requirements and solution diversity due to a historical "market-by-market" deployment approach, which was increasing costs and making it difficult to sustain an appropriate maintenance strategy. By deploying JDA ESO via JDA Cloud Services, Shell can standardise data formats and centralise many of its data management and reporting tasks. This offers Shell greater inventory visibility to enable proactive retail site management to enhance the customer experience. Additionally, the software upgrade process is simplified and the many points of failure associated with locally deployed solutions and local data format variation are removed.

JDA Enterprise Store Operations helps Shell manage the full lifecycle of perpetual inventory from point of order to point of receipt, driving sales and reducing operating costs. It provides comprehensive capabilities for forecasting, optimised ordering and replenishment, inventory execution, cash management, item and price management, rebates and invoice management, reporting and analytics, fuel operations, food preparation, mobility, and performance and vendor management. All of which helps to optimise the back office while fostering loyalty at the register.

JDA Cloud Services and JDA Consulting Services worked closely with Shell and its partners to define the required modules and configuration that met Shell’s business requirements. JDA ESO integrates with a number of third-party solutions via Shell middleware and provides data exports for inventory sales and retailer payments, fuel management, replenishment and pricing, as well as data for accounting and electronic supplier order placement.

Paul Pearse, IT programme manager for global site systems, Shell, said: "It is Shell’s goal to be the best fuel retailer in the world, delivering innovative customer solutions and the best customer experience in the industry.

"Deployment of ESO as part of our global site systems architecture is one way in which we look to achieve this goal, and to meet and exceed both our business’ and customers’ needs, now and in the future.

Bob Fuhrman, regional VP, services, EMEA, JDA Software, said: "JDA is pleased to see Shell achieve this important implementation milestone. JDA ESO provides Shell with the technology needed to execute corporate strategies at the market level to provide superior customer service and become a true extension of headquarters while supporting a variety of regional business variations."
