CityFibre brings Gigabit speeds to Yorkshire businesses

The firm wants local businesses to register their interest in the project now.

By Amy-Jo Crowley

Thousands of local businesses in Kirklees, West Yorkshire’s metropolitan borough, are set to benefit from enhanced broadband speeds thanks to a government-backed deal with CityFibre.

Called Kirklees Core, CityFibre wants to bring a GB fibre network to businesses in Batley, Dewsbury and Huddersfield, with the aim of connecting the first round of businesses by 2015.

The network construction will be demand-led, meaning that the size and route the network takes will be determined by demand from local businesses.

CityFibre also launched a campaign called ‘Gig Up Kirklees’, urging local businesses to register their interest online because the more businesses register in an area, the more likely the network will be extended to reach them.

CityFibre’s CEO Greg Mesch said: "Building a GB fibre network in Kirklees represents a step-change as significant as the shift from dial-up to broadband. No longer reliant on the antiquated copper networks, Kirklees businesses will have the capacity to position themselves at the heart of the UK economy as the technological revolution continues to gather pace.

"It’s crucial that as many businesses as possible can benefit and to ensure that, we urge you to register your interest."

It comes after CityFibre agreed a multi-million pound contract with Easynet, a Government-approved communications provider, in August to deploy dark fibre connectivity to the area.
