Cisco has introduced a threat-focused Next-Generation Firewall (NGFW) named Cisco ASA with FirePOWER Services which is designed to provide dynamic controls needed to assess threats, and optimise defenses to protect the networks used by organisations.

The company has integrated Sourcefire’s Advanced Malware Protection (AMP) with its native Next-Generation Intrusion Prevention Systems (NGIPS) and Cisco ASA 5500 Series firewall to develop an integrated threat defense.

Till now NGFW could not address advanced and zero-day attacks but with the new service, it will become possible as it uses three approaches: the Visibility-Driven approach can discovered suspect applications, hosts, and threats for comprehensive visibility.

The threat focused approach incorporates NGIPS for comprehensive protection and AMP to defend against persistent and zero day attack.

The Platform-Based approach used by Cisco ASA with FirePOWER Services provides advanced breach detection and remediation, all in a single device which facilitates improved protection at low cost.

The new services provide automated detection policy updates, and continuously analyses threat of known and unknown malware.

The company will provide two types of solution: Cisco ASA with FirePOWER Services and FirePOWER Services for Cisco ASA for its enterprise customers.

Cisco senior Security Business Group vice president Christopher Young said: "Now more than ever, organisations need to be able to implement dynamic controls to manage the pace of change of their environments and address security incidents."

" Cisco ASA with FirePOWER Services is a major step forward for the NGFW market, empowering customers to deepen their protection from the data center, through the network, to the endpoint with the agility to identify, understand, and stop advanced threats in real-time and retrospectively."
