The heads of China’s largest technology firms have agreed to censor Internet content more stringently than ever as the government seeks to exercise greater control over the web usage there.
Chief executives of 39 companies including Baidu and Alibaba agreed to "curb rumours" and the spreading of "harmful information".
The decision was agreed following a three-day session in China hosted by the government where all the major companies leaders were present.
The meeting was presided over by Wang Chen, director of the State Council Information Office, the government’s propaganda and information arm.
The Minister of Industry and Information Technology, Miao Wei was of the view that Internet companies must increase their investment in "tracking surveillance."
Earlier in late October, Beijing vowed to strengthen Internet administration.
China has the distinction of having the largest number of internet users in the world, numbering over 500 million.
