Canonical is reported to launch the Linux-powered Ubuntu smartphone by the end of may this year.

The company is expected to hand over the phones, which are expected to run on early versions of the operating system, to its employees for testing and development.

Canonical Ubuntu engineering vice president Rick Spencer said in a blog post that the company should drive as hard as it can to make the phones with Ubuntu Touch as real daily phones as soon as possible.

"Really eat our own dog food, so to speak," Spencer added.

"When you update your phone your user data is retained, even if updating with phablet-flash."

According to the company, the phone images will be usable and the device can be used to make and receive phone calls and SMS messages as well as browse the Web using both WiFi and 3G data.
